This project aims to enable young people to participate in positive activities that will encourage their personal and social development. The process involves young people being trained as grant makers, so that they can assess grant applications made by other young people who have an idea that could better the lives of young people and their communities through a project, activity, creating new opportunities or providing better youth facilities.
In Nottinghamshire there are nine forums in which Youth Initiative Grants operate. These include:
- seven within the existing District Youth Assemblies that assess applications made within their district
- one which has a countywide remit for those projects which cover more than one district
- one forum which is run by the Young Pioneers group, supported by the Disability Support Team
All of this will be achieved through young people taking a crucial role in deciding on how these funds will be spent. This will include them developing their skills as grant makers through structured training, which will include skills and knowledge development on:
- the funding process
- funding criteria
- equal opportunities (Are judgements fair and consistent?)
- grants making
- decision making processes
- evaluation processes
