Career Mark V

Career Mark logoCareer Mark 5, is an award which recognises quality Careers Education and Guidance. It is awarded on the achievement of a set of rigorous standards, which have been developed by schools, colleges, Connexions Services and LEAs across the East Midlands.

In 2007 Career Mark 5 replaced Career Mark VI and any school or college starting the validation process from 2008 will need to work to this revised version of the award.

  • It provides a clear framework for organisations to audit their current provision against and identify and plan developments to meet the standards
  • It brings together complementary provision – career(s) education, work related learning (WRL) and personal social health and economic education (PSHEE). Citizenship and individual target setting
  • Organisations are well prepared for OFSTED and post-16 inspections frameworks
  • Organisations can demonstrate good practice against the national IAG standards
  • It provides a framework for continuous improvement
  • It strengthens partnerships with other organisations such as Connexions, Education Business Partnerships (EBPs) local employers. other education providers, parents and other community links
  • Public recognition of good practice

Career Mark provides quality standards for Careers Education and Guidance and has been developed to improve the careers education and guidance that young people receive. The Award is reviewed on an annual basis to ensure that it meets the demands of the national agenda.

"schools are achieving recognition of effective partnerships through assessments, such as Career Mark". National Survey of Careers Education and Guidance, OFSTED.

Young people who have received an effective careers education programme delivered through the curriculum, alongside impartial advice and guidance from external guidance specialists, make the best transitions at age 16 and are less likely to switch or drop out of courses in Year 12.

The Award Process

To achieve a Career Mark Award schools and colleges must provide evidence that they have met the criteria within 5 standards:

  1. Management – ensures that the planning and management systems for CEIAG are coherent and effective. Download Standard M

  2. The Curriculum – ensures that the career(s) curriculum is well balanced and supports young people’s personal development. Download Standard C

  3. Information – ensures access to appropriate and relevant information and information handling skills. Download Standard I

  4. Guidance – ensures access to a planned programme of advice guidance and support. Download Standard G

  5. Outcomes – evaluates the effectiveness of the CEIAG provision and whether young people have the knowledge skills and attitudes to be competent careers planners. Download Standard O

Support will be available to schools and colleges working towards the Career Mark Award.

Assessment will be via a portfolio of evidence and interviews with an external assessor.

  1. The school/college commits to work towards Career Mark.

  2. Initial audit and action plan to meet standards and criteria.

  3. Initial planning meeting(s) in school/college with Career Mark Adviser and staff to clarify action plan.

  4. Implement action plan – Gather evidence of achievements.

  5. Prepare a portfolio of evidence for assessment.

  6. Portfolio checked by Career Mark Adviser.

  7. Assessment of portfolio and on-site interviews with staff and students.

  8. Report by Assessor to external verifier.

  9. Career Mark awarded – action agreed for 3 year development with Career Mark Advisers.

Career Mark 5 standards for schools and colleges

NB Career Mark IV

School and colleges who require re-validation or are currently working towards Career Mark IV can continue to use these standards but any new organisations embarking on the Career Mark Award process should use the new CM 5 standards.
