New income thresholds for the Education Maintenance Allowance for 2005/06
The following income thresholds for the EMA have been agreed for next year. (We have included the thresholds for the 2004/05 scheme in brackets.)
- Up to £20,270 for the weekly £30 EMA (up to £19,630)
- £20,271 - £24,850 for the weekly £20 EMA (£19,631 - 24,030)
- £24,851 - £30,000 for the weekly £10 EMA (£24,031 - £30,000)

Watch over me II video
A new teaching resource aimed at helping educate teenagers away from crime was launched today by the Home Secretary, David Blunkett. The Watch Over Me II video is aimed at helping young people ensure their personal safety and covers a broad range of challenging issues including domestic violence, drugs, gun crime and forced marriage. It will be provided free of charge to every secondary school in England and Wales.

Minimum wage
Changes to the National Minimum Wage to be introduced from 1st October.
The adult rate of the minimum wage will be increased from the present hourly rate of £4.50 to £4.85. The youth rate - for 18-21 year olds, will be increased from the present hourly rate of £3.80 to £4.10. A new minimum wage rate will be introduced for 16-17 year olds, set at an hourly rate of £3.00.
Young people on Apprenticeships and pre-apprenticeship programmes may be exempt from the minimum wage. Apprentices are only entitled to receive the minimum wage if they have completed the first year of their Apprenticeship and have attained the age of 19.
