Springboard to success

Hadden Park High and Connexions Nottinghamshire launch 'The Vault'

Picture of Graham Allen MP opening The VaultNottingham North MP, Graham Allen (pictured), demonstrated his support for education and development in Nottingham when he opened the new Progression Centre at Hadden Park High School in Bilborough.

He cut the ribbon at the Progression Centre, which was launched under its new name of 'The Vault', at the school at 12.15 on Friday, March 12, 2004

The Vault's aim is to act as a springboard to future opportunities for young people. The centre is designed to engage students in planning for post-school education, work and training and to encourage students to look ahead to the future.

The Vault features: on-screen access to job vacancies and career options; Viewpoint, an interactive package that encourages feedback; and a library providing information about work experience and support services. There is also a group area where students can discuss career and further training options with their Connexions Personal Adviser.

Progression Centres are a Connexions Nottinghamshire initiative. The Organisation offered all schools in Nottinghamshire the opportunity to bid for money to establish these centres.

The bid from Hadden Park impressed Connexions and they match-funded the centre's projected value. Hadden Park was amongst 11 schools given a grant for a Progression Centre and is the first to be officially launching this exciting initiative.

The Vault will be the focal point for multi-agency and multi-disciplinary support, with Personal Advisers from Connexions Nottinghamshire and Aim Higher using the centre to conduct interviews and offer advice on a whole range of learning, work and training options.

After the cutting of the ribbon indicating that The Vault is officially open for business, Head Teacher Pat Dubas and Connexions Operations Director for Nottingham City, Tony Graham (both pictured), talked about the importance of the centre in the progression of young people into post-16 learning and employment.

Head Teacher, Pat Dubas says: "Developing independent learning skills is key to raising attainment. The Vault is a new area in the school, specifically aimed at providing a more adult, independent study facility for Key Stage 4 pupils to engage in private study, additional learning opportunities or a range of workshop activities.

"The facility will be available to students during the normal school day and after school and will support them in achieving better results and developing the skills they require for lifelong learning".

Both the Army and Navy were also present on the day to offer careers advice to the students.
