Safety Focus video launched

Young people from Portland Training College joined sixth form pupils from The National School at Hucknall to star in a new video aimed at promoting personal safety to young people with Learning Disabilities.

The Connexions funded 'Safety Focus - Safe Life' film, an initiative from the Safety Focus project, was premiered at Portland College on March 31.

The 'Safe Life' film is made with young people to promote personal safety and police awareness for people with learning disabilities and difficulties. It covers areas including making a 999 call, handling an emergency, identifying a real police officer, keeping belongings safe, saying no to a stranger or friends, staying out of fights and avoiding trouble.

The Safety Focus Project has been running since 2001. It is a partnership between Nottinghamshire Police, Portland College, Values into Action and The Ann Craft Trust.

It is the second film of this type that the Safety Focus Team has developed. The first - 'Safety Focus - Street Wise' was focussed on staying safe when out and about.

Showing of Safety Focus filmThe film was very well received and, as befitting of such a long-awaited film premiere, Portland College was glittering with local stars. All the young actors were present, as was the Chief Constable of Nottinghamshire Police, Steve Green (pictured).

The film was shown in short segments, with actors, film-makers, professionals - including Connexions Personal Adviser Glynn Hopkins - and students adding comment, thus providing a medley of film and ideas. All those who had been involved with the film were given the opportunity to talk about their experiences.

Connexions Voluntary Sector Co-ordinator, Gabrielle Moran said: "By funding this film, we are helping students with learning difficulties and disabilities to lead independent lives in employment, education and training.

"We believe that the voluntary sector is an important partner in this area."
