CAST project in Ashfield

Sharon Harvey admires a catchCAST develops and delivers courses and workshops built around angling for schools and establishes community based, volunteer led angling clubs for young people. The project uses angling as a means to inspire and motivate young people to develop an interest in learning by teaching them how to plan and catch specimen sized fish of selected species. CAST encourages young people to recognise the merits of learning skills in order to achieve goals and understand the links between education and success.

Schools courses deliver the national curriculum through alternative means, building the curriculum into lessons on angling and helping young people improve in terms of literacy and numeracy aswell as focusing on life skills, social skills etc. Community based projects are run by the young people themselves with support from CAST staff and volunteers. Each project has a social enterprise attached and the members determine the activities and skills they would like to develop, budget for them and carry out work to finance them. Again the aim is to help young people develop an ability to learn and an interest in learning, while delivering training in a whole range of skills, both social and practical.
