Nottingham MP encourages young successes to act as inspiration to future school leavers

Nottingham MP, Graham Allen, encouraged young people from his constituency who have gone on to higher education to go back to school.

The Nottingham North MP met young people, who attended schools in his constituency, at the Connexions Centre, on Carlton Street, in Nottingham on Friday 2 April.

The idea behind the visit was to encourage past pupils, who have gone on to higher education, to go back into their old school and talk to students about their experiences. Graham Allen is keen to encourage more young people to view Higher Education as a credible and viable option.

Graham Allen says: "My constituency has the lowest number of youngsters in the UK going on to Higher Education. Connexions and all other agencies related to education in Nottingham North are now doing something about the problem. These young people are proof that youngsters from Broxtowe, Bulwell and Bestwood are just as capable of going on to Higher Education. If they can do it, then so can every youngster in my constituency."

The young people who have been invited to meet the MP will be asked to visit their old schools and talk about their route to Higher Education; the barriers they faced; what they did to overcome the barriers; and ultimately the benefits of continuing into Higher Education.

Speaking to the Evening Post, Rachel Elliot, 20, from Bulwell, who is currently studying English Literature in Sheffield, says: "I don't think people understand the consequences of wasting their education and the impact it could have on their lives".
