Connexions Nottinghamshire is not only helping young people with education and careers advice but with their personal development as well
So when Connexions was introduced to Nottinghamshire, health was a key partner alongside education, social services and the youth system to mention a few.
So why is health important to Connexions Nottinghamshire? In terms of health, the staff at Connexions are being faced everyday by young people with all kinds of health issues. Those pregnant at 15, mental health issues, self-harm or alcohol and drug abuse, right down to illnesses such as asthma and diabetes affecting young people’s lives.
Being healthy is not just about physical fitness and healthy eating. It’s also about keeping your mind healthy. Being a teenager is a difficult and challenging time. Connexions recognises this and as a result ran a health day in Mansfield.
Connexions are also committed to contributing to government targets such as Teenage Pregnancy Strategy. These targets are about reducing teenage pregnancy and minimising the social exclusion caused by becoming a teenage parent. Nottinghamshire currently has an above average number of conceptions to under 18s when compared to the rest of Britain.
The number of young people who say that they’ve used an illegal substance in the last 12 months is worrying, not to mention the number of those young people who go on to become regular users or are affected by the drug use of family and friends.
