City Hospital Education Base win extra resources

Julie Overend and Gill CokerThe City Hospital Education Base were lucky winners of a £100 cheque from Connexions Nottinghamshire in November. At the Information Resources Fair in May this year, we set teachers the challenge of evaluating our website for partners and parents, www.cnxnotts.co.uk. Everyone had the chance to send back the feedback form and be drawn out of the hat for the prize.

The Information Development Team went to the Education Base to present them with the cheque and discover more about their work.

Staff at the Education Base teach children and young people from 4-19, who come into the City Hospital for treatment. The staff aim to provide continuity of education during their stay. There are 4 full-time equivalent teachers in the team and a part-time administration assistant.

Children and young people come to the City Hospital from a wide area to receive treatment for a range of conditions including asthma, diabetes, Sickle cell anaemia and kidney failure and transplants. The unit also teaches children and young people with special educational needs. Some pupils attend the unit 3 or 4 days a week for haemodialysis, some for several years. In cases of cystic fibrosis, they have been attending the unit from babies into adult life. The Education Base therefore forms a significant part of their school lives. The staff at the Base liaise very closely with the young people’s own schools to ensure that each student receives an education tailored to their individual needs.

Julie Overend, Connexions Co-ordinator and Head of the Base, said the role of the Connexions PA is crucial in bridging the gap between the work of the unit and the needs of the young people, offering specific advice that is beyond their expertise. The PA is able to link to specialist agencies and other Connexions partnerships. Connexions also "support young people that are coming in regularly, making sure they are not missing out". This can also include young parents who have to attend the Unit for extended periods so their babies can receive treatment. One young mum has just successfully gained a place at the Aspire e2e in Nottingham.

The staff at the unit regularly use Connexions Resources such as Kangaroo, online resources, and paper based information to enable young people to achieve positive outcomes in their lives.

With £100 to spend, the staff are going to visit the Connexions professional resources collection, based in Information Services at Connexions HQ, Heathcoat Street, Hockley to choose something special!

Remember:
School Staff can visit the resources collection at Connexions Head Office. Ring 0115 912 6611 and speak to a member of staff in the Information Services Team.

Thanks to Angie Mindel and Julie Overend for providing us with the opportunity of visiting the unit and speaking to us about their work.
