Let's Talk Guidance

Let's Talk packYour essential tool-kit for enhancing and developing practice

in partnership with
Liane Hambly Consultancy

We are proud to present our brand new DVD and accompanying learning manual on CD called ‘Let’s Talk Guidance’ and hope that you enjoy watching the clips and will want to order your copy immediately.

Just to give you a bit of background to this project:

Having been responsible for the delivery of guidance interview training for over 10 years we have often been asked by delegates ‘Can we see a video?’ or worse still ‘Why can’t the trainers role play a model interview in front of the group?’

We all know that there is no such thing as a perfect interview, although there is some excellent practice out there. The question is “How do we capture it on film?”

Careers Scotland logoWe have been working with Liane Hambly, an independent trainer and consultant for a number of years in the delivery of guidance training for both Connexions Nottinghamshire and the Consortium of East Midlands Connexions services, and we both agreed that the need for a DVD was long overdue and it was time to do something about it. Careers Scotland Highlands and Islands also thought there was a gap in the market and have provided some sponsorship for this production.

There is also an excellent learning manual on CD which either trainers can use to support course delivery or learners can work through at their own pace.

What you will see is real guidance workers using their own skills to demonstrate the art of guidance.

Reviews and Feedback

Gill Mason - Training Manager, Connexions Humber

"Thank you for Lets Talk Guidance! It is really hard to find quality training materials to use in IAG training. This DVD and the Learning Guide have been an invaluable addition to our resources. We have used it in training new guidance workers and we have used it review guidance practice with our experienced practitioners. The feed back has been universally positive, experienced participants have expressed renewed enthusiasm and have reported successful use of new tactics and techniques."

Peter Beven, Programme Leader – Advice, Guidance and Counseling at Northumbria University

"The DVD is an excellent resource and the learning manual is clear, concise and effective.

Potential uses for the package include NVQ 4 and Refresher/CPD training plus undergraduate and postgraduate study in Advice and Guidance".

Careers Wales West:

"Liked the style of the Adviser [in clip 1] a lot and Stage 1, we felt, is spot on! She covered a lot of ground in 20 minutes and certainly moved the thinking from just Law degree to other degrees. The clip certainly shows that in a sixth form interview, it is not just about meeting information needs. As we've said, in 20 minutes she did a huge amount we would like to have this clip set in context so that we can be aware of why other things may not have been done or, perhaps they were to be covered in another interview.

Having said all that, we'd love to hear our interviewers do this!! The clip, although only 20 minutes, resulted in a further hour or so of debate. The clip is full of rich and robust material for training purposes and for showing and sharing good practice."

"There's something about this adviser [clip 1], and the one in clip 4, that shows their composure, their calmness and purpose. No question is a wasted question."

"Clip 4: liked the way that she said that it seems like a confidence issue, very nicely done. Recognised that this was as far as she could go with her today. Handled the mother beautifully."

Alison Skellern – GuideLine Career Services:

"The DVD is very helpful – a good variety of client groups and types with different types of guidance needs. It also showcased some helpful tactics and tools, such as the use of cards and checklists when looking at ground rules and ground rules. I thought the manual was excellent – very detailed and thorough; and also includes practical help, such as examples of questions to use."

1: 17 year old Jasmin intends to study law and become a lawyer. She becomes slightly defensive when asked about her ideas and so the interview demonstrates how an adviser can explore and gently challenge a client to think more widely.

2: an interview with an adult who is thinking of returning to work. This interview demonstrates exploring and working with the client's preferred decision making style, in this case, using the imagination.

3: Luke is an 18 year old who wants to go to university but keep an open mind as to the long term. This clip demonstrates encouraging the client to take a pro-active stance. The rest of the interview explores how an adviser may use the Planned Happenstance approach with clients (engaging in curious exploration whilst keeping an open mind).

4: Liz and her mother disagree about what Liz's next steps should be. The rest of the interview demonstrates how the adviser responds to this situation.

5: Matt is in year 10 and has been sent to the interview by his tutor. The interview demonstrates how an adviser can explain the benefits of guidance to a client who sees no point in being there and engage him in planning for his future.

6: This interview is of Hussain, an unemployed 17 year old who has called into the office to ask about benefits and appears disinterested in the options avaialable. The interview demonstrates how to challege a client's perceptions of guidance.

Picture of AdviserSo why buy Let's Talk Guidance?

Let's Talk Guidance is an essential guide to professional guidance practice. It demonstrates:

  • good practice in adult and young person interviews, including a review
  • how advisers can explore the client's decision making and apply both traditional and innovative approaches including Happenstance and imagination
  • some of the more challenging aspects of practice (clients who have been sent, who are lacking confidence, who are resistant, who are defensive, who don't see the point of guidance, who have attended with a parent at odds over their future)
  • how to contract with clients who do not want to be there, who have narrow expectations and no understanding of what guidance involves;
  • a range of tactics to use and how the interview can be tailored to fit different clients.

Learning Manual CD

Designed for practitioners at all levels, the 105 page manual provides an overview and update of relevant theory to the models demonstrated in the DVD. It provides practical ideas for training and resources that may be used to support the guidance process.
